What stands in the way becomes the way.
— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 5.20
… Prime Minister [Louis St.] Laurent [of Canada] reports [Sir Winston] Churchill as advising him: “Never stand when there is an opportunity to sit down, and and never sit down when you can lie down.”
— quoted in Teach Yourself to Live, by Charles Garfield Lott Du Cann, chapter X
Do not lose sight of the fact that alcoholic drink is not the only dangerous drink when consumed too immoderately or frequently. Coffee, I repeat, killed the great Balzac. Over-strong, over-stewed, and too frequent cups of tea, ‘‘the cups that cheer but not inebriate,’’ can be really harmful to the digestion. And many so-called “soft drinks” have deleterious ingredients. Nor are unboiled milk and unsterilised water always safe.
